It’s funny how a whisper can sometimes push a hurricane; expect one to swirl up by Monday. The rumor, as was whispered into the ear of a DM News reporter, is that Google is about to undergo a major corporate restructuring just as they prepare to release AdSense for Audio.

Giselle Abramovich floated out a rumor post on Tuesday, the steady crescendo of which has expanded to discussion on at least five other well-known blogs.

According to Abramovich, Google “is a bout to set up an IBM-like structure. What this means is that there would be one global account director per account, that pulls in resources to sell as needed – PPC, Print, Radio, Video, Display, etc.”

And the blogosphere went flashback-squiggly, hearkening back to Google’s acquisitions of dMarc and YouTube. That was a dawning for some, but for the others, it became a cat’s-out-of-the bag situation. Abramovich’s little leak became a spilling of guts, moving bloggers to tell what they know.

ThoughtShapers.com’s Jeff Molander was quick to quote three credible sources as the benefactor of what appear to be planned Google leaks. As David Utter reported, these leaks have been more prevalent in the past week, an apparent new Google strategy to gauge reaction before official release. Molander then expounds on the audio component of Google’s master plan.

AdSense for Audio would place contextual ads alongside podcasts, and perhaps other streaming media (like that found on YouTube), all the wayÂ…perhaps, perhaps, perhapsÂ…to radio and television. MTV is already on board.

Just to add to the speculation, I’m submitting Google has a killer audio-recognition technology that won’t rely on spidered transcripts. Remember the application that can <!-- D(["mb","listen to your television and serve up advertising? \n

Molander uncovers also, the well-turned phrase of the week, courtesy of Revenews\'s Wayne Porter: \n

<div style\u003d\"margin-left:10px\">As Google turns you can feel the fabric of the media tear beneath your feet.

eWeek\'s <a href\u003d\"http://googlewatch.eweek.com/blogs/google_watch/archive/2006/10/27/14214.aspx\" target\u003d\"_blank\" onclick\u003d\"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)\">Steve Bryant says he\'s been holding out for months, but in light of Molander\'s post, felt he needed to come clean. \n

<div style\u003d\"margin-left:10px\">Earlier this year, Google contracted with several podcast engineers to help them develop Google AdSense for Audio. According to one source the product was originally slated for a 3Q release, but apparently it slipped behind a month or so.

\n
\nThere may also be an mp3 player in the works, but that could be the most speculative \nof all. But Bryant\'s thoughts that this podcast search and ad technology could \nbe integrated into mobile services, Gmail, Google Talk, and Google Desktop is \nprobably right on the money.

With a lot of attention paid to the big number, $1.65 billion, there are some other numbers that illustrate Google’s interest in YouTube much better than the price tag. Google CEO Eric Schmidt probably isn’t having second thoughts about the acquisition of YouTube.

Editor’s Note: Â As the next day dawns after the Google and YouTube deal, everyone has one question on their minds: can Google monetize YouTube? Will video ads succeed, or will they fail to match the success of text ads in the online world? Let us know at WebProWorld. The company gained some significant traffic with video, and more importantly picked up a massive playground for testing video advertising.

“In acquiring YouTube, Google has, in one fell swoop, increased their number of video streams – and potential ad revenue from streaming – tenfold,” said Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman. ComScore claimed it measures actual video streaming activity, as opposed to market share of sites, and can better assess the online video arena.

By the comScore numbers, Google will see a huge jump in the video streams people in the US view from their sites. In July 2006, Google delivered some 60 million streams to visitors. YouTube dished out 649 million in the same period. More than 106.5 mil US visitors viewed video content for the month.

Plenty of promise for Google’s video advertising aspirations, whatever they may be, exists. The importance of online video has reached a point where online content providers from big media companies to individual media netcasters have embraced it in various forms.

The concept of “media company” may be the context in which Google should be considered. Publishing 2.0 blogger Scott Karp wrote that the YouTube acquisition “solidifies Google’s position at the center of media.”

“Google is now the archetypal media company – online video is just the next step in their quest to monetize the world’s content through advertising,” said Karp. “You supply the content – Google will take care of the rest.”
